well, the turbo was not starved for coolant, the turbo inlet pipe fell off.
the egine block is not the housing for the T-stat or waterpump, maybe for your 01 but not my 00 atw. heres a t-stat housing http://www.ecstuning.com/stage/edpd/...ro&engine=1.8T
and search ECS for a waterpump with housing

I've seen plenty of cars run w/ after jumping a tooth or 2 on the TB. They run like **** but they run.

My bad. For some reason I thought you had an AWM.

Sounds like misfires to me. ATW coil packs never die and there is no ICM. So it's more than likely the maf or the plugs. I had a hairline crack in one of my plugs a while back in the porceline insulator part. It caused misfires only under heavy load. Start with replacing your plugs. Misfires can easily go unregistered if they are very random and seldom. You never had a cel? I had waterpump give the same sounds a while back. There was play in the bearing and the impellar is clanking around. Took a while to pinpoint.

I have replaced all sparkplugs, replaced T-stat with housing, and replaced the entire waterpump. so far no sounds and no more backfires. its only been 1 week. but sounds great. and no, I never got a cel or any codes.
