Correct. This is the cam sensor:



I would pull the cover, verify the cam marks per the posts above, and then check the timing marks to be certain everything is aligned. Then retry the startup, and recheck compression if necessary.

 

If you have compression and it's timed right, don't pull the valve cover. Spend your time looking for a plug hanging somewhere.

 

Still have a no start issue after replacing the timing belt.

Trying to avoid pulling the valve cover if it may be something else. Here is what I have done today:

I have spark when I lay the pulg and coil on the valve cover and crank.

I appear to have fuel pressure. I cracked the fuel line above the engine and fuel squirted out like it had good pressure. I tried giving it a shot of ether - no luck.

I found a test using a multimeter for the cam position sensor on the plug side, not the sensor side. I seem to have the correct voltage on the plug side of the sensor.

I'm wondering if I had a no start issue before the timing belt broke and that is what I'm still dealing with, possibily unrelated to the timing belt. For reveiw, I had driven the car, went to a 1 hour meeting, came out and car would not start. After about 30 seconds or cranking I lost the timing belt (sound when cranking changed significantly).

I'd appreciate any other suggestions on things to check. I think my next step is to pull the valve cover and be sure the cams are lined up correctly.

So when you turn the key, what exactly happens? Does it crank over and not catch, or does it just flat out do nothing at all?

 

It cranks over and doesn't catch. Sounds a bit different though. I chalked that up to not having the front end put together with the serpintine belt etc.

 

OK... so I guess we screwed up the leak down test. Engine has no compression. Head is coming off.... bummer. Thanks for the help guys.

 

That's always a long shot...but worth a try.
