Default camshaft a

ran vag com today and got an engine code - 16395 - p0011. I havent ran my vagcom in a few months so this is the first time ive gotten this code and it hasnt trigged a cel light yet. Ross tech wiki says its either camshaft adjustment valve or the fuel pump relay. My car only seems to idle rough right at startup but after that it idles fine .The timing belt isnt loose at all. Is there any way to tell if the camshaft adjustment valve (n205) is bad without replacing it? Also where is the fuel pump relay(j17) ive searched and cant find a thing. Thanks for your help.

What kind of oil are you running. I promise it's a relevant question.

...And what did the previous owners use and how often was it changed?

Check the oil pressure via VAG. I'm guessing Epic and I are both wondering about dirty oil or possibly sludge...

I dont know much about what the previous owner. I did get most of his invoices from maintenance but i those are at my parents house now in a different state. I do know he wasnt running synthetic though. Ill go check the oil pressure real quick and get back to you. Would seafoaming help in the case of sludge?

No. Seafoam cleans the intake system. Sludge is in the oil. The two don't (or shouldn't!) mix.

When was the last oil change? My advice for now would be to replace the oil with 0W-40 full synth Mobil1 or Elf, use a genuine Audi filter, and add BG MOA (motor oil additive). Use ONLY BG! It might only be available at your local dealer, but it's worth the cash. Once you've changed the oil, reset the DTCs, and keep your fingers crossed. Keep an eye on the oil pressure and change it frequently (3-5K miles).

The P0011 code is for your VCT solenoid (variable cam timing, AWM code 1.8T, 2001+). If the car is running smoothly with no other codes, it could just be a bit dirty or sticky and the cam won't always adjust as it should. Eventually, it might need to be replaced, but try the simple stuff first.

thanks for all the replies, sorry its taken me so long to get back to this. I just had my oil changed about 2 weeks ago. I thought you could seafoam the oil system prior to getting an oil change as well?

If the oil is sludging up, then doing a seafoam treatment on the oil would likely help quite a bit.
