Default Can't find a remedy for the auto dimming mirror

Hello there,

I'm new to the forums so I'll get the introduction out of the way and say hello

I have a 2001 2.8 5spd, and loving it except for 2 minor annoyences. The one that bothers me the most is that my rear view mirror won't auto-dim. I've tried googling and looking through several audi forums but no luck to find the answer. So far I've gathered that the sensor in the Rear view mirror controls the auto dimming for all 3 mirrors. So here is the problem, my outside mirrors dim just fine but the rear view mirror does not. I saw pictures that people posted about leaking rear view mirrors, but it's not the case here. Works fine as a mirror, no signs of leakage but won't dim.

The other issue I have is my flicker. Sometimes it works fine, other times it doesn't work at all. Sometimes it ticks/flashes a few times and goes off. More often then not when it's giving me trouble if I hold it pressed down a little it will work but if I click it all the way up or done it will just shut off. And on a very rare occasion which happened maybe twice is it will just stay on solid when i put it on. Sometimes it seems like the position of the steering wheel plays a role in it.

Welcome to AF!

The auto-dimming rear view mirror can be a bit of a pain in the ***. There are actually two photosensitive eyes on it, one facing forwards and one facing back. The one facing forwards through the windshield determines the amount of ambient light outside. Basically, how bright the sun is. The one facing to the rear looks for headlights behind you and decides, based out how bright it is outside, whether or not to dim your mirrors.

You say your side mirrors dim ok but the rear view doesn't. Try covering the photo eye in the front of the mirror with your finger and shining a flashlight into the one facing the rear of the car (the one you can see while driving). If that doesn't dim all three mirrors, there's something goin on. There's also some electrical connections behind the mirror. That's how your rear view mirror tells the side mirrors to dim. Check that everything is connected properly back there.

What's a flicker?

Default Try cleaning connections in flasher

The flasher (turn signal relay) is right behind the little triangle in the middle of the dash. I had a similar problem with my turn signals, I removed the flasher, found some white corrosion on the connections, cleaned it up, and now it works fine, I hope that helps.
Did you ever figure out your rear-view mirror problem? mine does the same thing...
