Car's overheating, don't know what's going on...
So earlier today, I left school, and as I was leaving, the coolant light was flashing and beeping. Its done this before, so I just assumed it was a tad low like last time. I went to pick up my sister at her school, and as I was in the carpool lane, my car started steaming. I shut off the engine and opened the hood, and noticed my coolant was boiling and spilling out. I assumed it was overheating and rolled my car into a spot.
After sitting there maybe 30 minutes calling my parents asking what to do, i called my mechanic, who told me it was probably a dead fan clutch, and told me that as long as I don't sit in a drive thru or a lot of traffic, I should be fine.
So I began driving home, and after maybe 5 minutes on the highway, my engine heat shot up and I was on the shoulder again with my hood open, trying to cool it down.
After maybe 10 minutes of sitting there, I drove it to a gas station maybe a mile away, and it's now sitting there. I called my mechanic and updated him on what happened and though he didn't say much he did not sound optimistic at all about what my car was doing. What is the worst case scenario I can expect?
Also, should I have to sell my car, what could I get for my a4 with about 141,000 miles and a blown engine?

I think it all leaks out when the engine overheats and it starts to boil out. If that doesn't happen the level doesn't change. But there is no avoiding overheating. I would have thought that driving on the highway, when its cold at that, would help to fend off this problem but seems to actually make it worse.
