Default Cat. Conv. is leaking

Theres a hole on the top of my catalytic converter. The shop I was at said its a part only Audi makes and it cost about $1700. Couple questions...Is this true? Is this a part of the exhaust you could fix by patching? The shop was pretty quick to go to replacement over repair. Any info is appreciated.

Its a 99 2.8L Quattro, ECS doesn't have any OEM replacements for the 2.8 :/ Do you know any other options? I am also wondering if I have to replace the entire assembly or just the cat.

So far the cheapest I found is on ebay, just not to sure on the quality of the material as it is...ebay.

Also found one made my Bosal, about $100 more than the ebay one..

You guys think the eBay option is a bad one? Kinda strapped for cash right now with school resuming session this week.

Also, does my car have 2 Cats? As I keep seeing both driver/passenger sides available. Since my exhaust comes out he passenger side I would figure thats the one I need.. I dont remember seeing two when I was under the car looking at the shop.

yes your 2.8 has 2 catalytic converters. You can buy a universal cat from ECS for around $80 as long as you know the measurements of the cat ( " dia. of pipe and the length.)

i agree with obnoxious drunk (haha), get the universals if you want to save cash. the magnaflow 53004 is supposed to work from what i hear. ive got a pair of them sitting in my apartment. got the two of them from amazon for like $130 shipped. now i just need to find a place to weld them on so i can pass emissions.

whats up morristown? i spent some time in yardly PA across the river chillin with my buddy for a summer. i miss drinking lions head.
