Default Cleaning the EGR

I know ive asked this a million times, and i haven't really gotten a solid answer yet. Alot of people have said that you coudl clean the EGR valve. How would i do that. Just take it off and run waterr through it or air or something? maybe some wd40? Could i do anything that would harm it or put something in it that woudl screw up my engine more. Im not really sure how it works or what it does exactly, i know the full name, but not really sure its real purpose. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Its my last fix before i say my prayers for not needing to fix it for acouple more weeks haha

yeah its kinda wierd, someone actually got the pics to make a simple DIY, but you unbolt the 2 bolts ont eh EGR valve itself and then go under and remove the nut on the downpipe. after that you simple pull the valve up and get to cleaning it with a few nice blasts of wd-40.
