Default Cleaning the valve cover

Guys,

I've been searching all over the place because I know I've read this somewhere on the forum but I'm not able to find the thread. I've got a leak at my 1.8T valve cover just over the cat which stinks like a sweaty pig when the oil drips on the cat and burns up. I'll probably tackle it at some point this coming weekend, but I've read something about cleaning the cover itself for some specific reason other than doing it for the sake of doing it. Anyone have any thoughts as to the correct way to clean the cover itself? I'm not referring to where the gasket itself mounts, but the large amount of surface area under the cover.

Thanks everyone!

-Mike

it's to clean the gunk off so it doesn't stay in your engine. gunk can clog the oil pump screen and if that happens, your engine will say goodnight

Thanks for the reply. I get the idea of cleaning it for that purpose which makes total sense, but there was something else specific that I missed and just found with a different set of search criteria.

Thanks again!
