Default Clutch need to be replaced?

Firstly I tried to search for my answer with no luck. So I have a 2001 A4 and had noticed some ticking noises recently that sounded like it was coming from the right front. I know that the boot on that side has needed to be replaced so I thought that it was about time to get that done and maybe replace an axle.

Today during Superbowl half-time I tried to go get some food and my car wouldn't start. The push in clutch message keeps showing even after pressing it in. The car sounds like it wants to start but feels like it's having a more hard time than usual during ignition. I can smell exhaust too so I think i'm at least getting some pistons to fire briefly. Any help would be appreciated.

Sooooo , what shape is your battery in?

Clutch pedal switch? But you would not get starter engagement at all if it were bad.

The battery is fine. I managed to get her started about an hour after I posted this. She had a rough start but now everything seems to be fine. Still baffled.
