It works intermittently. Any ideas?

 

Likely the sender unit. Very common failure item on the B5's. A new one is around $25 from aftermarket sites such as ECS Tuning. Also easy-peasy to DIY the replacement in ten minutes or less.

when i first bought my car about 10 months ago mine also worked half the time. then after the winter it has worked fine 100% of the time for the last few months so im being lazy and not changing it. as soon as it stops working again, or i place another order with ecs, il pick up another. its a very easy install.
