Hi I have a 1999 a4 1.8t 4 cyl, which recently had starting problems and occasionaly dies when driving. I brought to the shop and they scanned and said was the crank position sensor. Im having trouble finding where the sensor is located. If anyone could give some tips for replacing this sensor, would be much appreciated.

i thought the CPS read the trigger wheel on the crank, which is about 2-3" behind the center of the 4th piston, so the sensor should be somewhere around there. the teeth on the flywheel are what the starter grabs onto.

Dude. I'm a total space cadet. You're right ghost. I have no idea why I wrote that, I was thinking of the engine speed sensor on a Porsche. That's what I get for posting at 2:30 am after a hectic week. Thanks ghost, post edited.

 

crank position sensor is right infront of the oil cooler on the block itself
unless this is working intermittantly the car will not run at all if it goes bad

 

the electrical connection is under the coolant bottle, i unhooked it, started cutting zip ties from up top layed down with the cutters and followed it to the sensor
