Default damn starter

if anyone has changed a starter on the 1.8T, please lend me some advise. There appears to be a bracket holding it in place, and I can't quite figure out how to get it off. There is a hose clamp that looks like it holds everything together, but the part you unscrew is in an impossible spot.

TIY

Edit: I'm doped up on percocet right now, but I NEED to get this done. So if it's something simple, please excuse my altered mental state.

to add insult to injury, mother nature is being a bitch. mid 60s to low 70s for the past 2 days, and sunny. Today? Cloudy and about 40. I'm in the process of dismounting the AC compressor without taking off the lines... I'm worried about getting it back in there without messing up the belt. I'll tackle that when the time comes. But the AC compressor is really in the way. Gotta warm back up before I climb back under on the cold *** concrete floor. I know I'm being a little bitch about it, but what I thought would be a 2 hour job is turning out more difficult than the TB and CAs I did last summer, combined!

Pull the electrical connections off, unbolt the bracket to the block, and then there are the 2 long annoying bolts that hold it into the bell housing. Getting different extensions and going in from different angles help.

I've got the bolts out, but I don't see where the bracket mounts to the block... Back out in the cold to investigate. Thanks Faster

ha... turns out the bracket isn't mounted to anything... it came loose why feeling around... I think I have to move the AC comp, though. I can't back the starter out far enough with the AC there...

Yea, for some reason that bracket is bolted to the block on some, and not on others iirc. And on the AC thing, I can't remember, it's been awhile since I had AC in my car.

Once I got the AC out of the way, the rest is easy... got the starter out, wife just brought me MickeyDs for lunch, so I'm taking another break. FYI, for anyone who searches how to replace the starter on the 1.8T... start by unbolting the AC compressor and moving it out of the way. The lines have plenty of slack... it makes the job pretty simple, actually, and it's pretty straight forward after that...

Thanks again, Faster.

Not anymore... got everything in and back together...

No start. Not even a click (it at least clicked before). I have everything wired up exactly how it came out. I'm done for the day, I'll come back to it tomorrow. One problem with me and percocet is it makes me very edgy, and I don't have the patience right now to investigate further...

You missed the ground. Or you have the Positive battery cable hooked up to where the ground should be, in which case you need to go fix that immediately.
