damn starter
maybe you put the lil 50 clip on the wrong post (the slip on clip).
truthfully, I used the WAG method. The battery is good, and the starter would click once, but not turn over. I was 90% sure. I'm going to climb under with the multimeter and investigate further.
Alright, I spent a couple hours doing more troubleshooting last night, and here's what I've found so far... Main voltage from the battery to the starter is good. The start relay (in socket 13 of the relay plate) is good, and there is voltage at the socket with the key in the start position, which tells me the clutch position sensor works, and the ignition switch is good as well.
One last check before I rip the new starter out and take it to get tested... If I check the voltage at the starter on the smaller wire, I should get 12 volts with the key in the start position. If I have that, then I'm trying the screwdriver test...

Well, I fixed it. Turns out the "start" and "relay" prongs on the new starter are swapped a complete 180*, so when I put the new one in, and wired it the same way the old one was, I had the smaller start wire on the wrong prong. So, in the end, all is good, the car starts with no problems, and I was correct about the starter being bad.
I don't think anyone was really paying attention, but years from now, if someone actually uses the search feature, I wanted to make sure this thread was complete.
