Default Did I just mess up a timing belt job?

On my 2001 AWM (late model), I THINK I made a mistake...

I pulled the pin in the tensioner with the tensioner pulley not fully holding the timing belt tight. The tensioner relesaed the spring loaded pin (it shot fully out) and the gap between the lever on the tensioner pulley and the tensioner housing is significantly greater than the recommended 8mm (it is several inches).

Is there a way to reset the pin? If not, do I need to order a new tensioner?

The tensioner design seems retarded if it can be messed up this easily.

take the tensioner off, then compress it with something, then stick the pin back in.

^^^^

agreed

be aware that the tensioner is oil damped so it takes a little bit of time/effort to push it back in all the way

Yeah the force to compress it is pretty substantial - go slow when you press it back in.

Def do it in a vice and dont slam it around too much. I recompressed mine and I dont exactly like how it acts now, I might just buy a new one to avoid a failure.

Done. Had to take the assembly to pepboys. They put it in their metal vice and i stuck the pin back in. Haynes is terrible - it says to pul the pin first - I'm burning that book.

Thanks for your advice.
