Default Dumb transmission question

Ok so it's a long and depressing story but the long and short is that I feel the need to replace the TCM and either completely replace the transmission or rebuild it.

I have a 00 A4 1.8TQT. The transmission code is EFQ. I have been having a lot of difficulty locating a EFQ transmission, can I be lazy and just use a FAL transmission? I realize that there are supposed to be differecnces between the DTV, EFQ, and FAL transmissions, but ZF lists all three transmissions with the same internal part number of 5HP29FLA and all three use the same rebuild kit. How would I know which transmission has a E17 VS. E18/2 speed sensors just looking at it? Because I am planning on replacing the TCM as well can I really just pick one of the transmissions as long as I have a matching TCM?

On a related note, transmissions scare me but I am told that they really shouldn't. Has anyone rebuilt a ZF transmission before? What was it like? How hard was it?

I have a TCM out of a '99.5. Don't know if it'll work, but the part number is 8D0927156BN. I've got it on eBay for $125 or best offer. Let me know directly if you're interested and we can work something out. email me at william.d.adams@comcast.net

I had my tranny go and decided to do a swap to a manual. It's a lot of work, but if you have a donor car, it's worth it. From what I understand, the rebuild kits are hard to come by. Good luck.
