Default Engine wanted. 1996 b5 a4 2.8l.

A mechanic messed up my engine. Anyway if you had to replace your engine on a 1996 B5 A4 2.8L, what would be your preference on a budget? (1) Buy a used engine with 38K miles for $1,000. (install add $600) (2) Pay a machine shop to recondition both heads for $240 total. (install add $800). Any other options? Where can I buy an almost new 1996-1998 engine?

most of that installation would not be hard, installation would include replacing a gasket, and bolting the heads back on.

Yea its a bit more involved than that, but I'd get the heads redone and DIY. It's not impossible, it saves you money, and you can learn something about your car.
