Talking Finally! Got an A4

I have been researching and searching for an A4 quattro and finally found one I could afford... but it has its issues like any used car, It is a 98 1.8t quattro 5spd, lets start with the good things

Has a ko4, boost gauge, aftermarket lights(with halo's)/S4 front grill

But the halo's aren't hooked up
I will need to replace the manifold gasket (not to the block but the one that goes to the exhaust from the turbo... not sure what it is called)
Has a BOV... not 100% sure but I believe that the DV is safer
And its nearly impossible to shift into reverse, I have just read something about having to push down to get into reverse? does the 98 have that
The clutch catches super high (but isnt slipping)
Rough idle, needs vagcom? or factory throttle body alignment
Side mirrors are burned out (previous owner left the heater on for too long?)

Are there any simple fix's or tutorials that I haven't found searching (and I have used that search bar... not a total idiot, just a slight one)

well i think i can knock out a few answerers for you.

- As for the bov, don’t use it. DV is the way to go for sure. Forge 007 is the most commonly used

- All our factory clutches catch at the very top so if it’s not slipping you should be in good shape.

Sorry i can’t answer any more. Enjoy the new car!

-Not sure what a k04 boost gauge is. Do you mean k04 turbo?
-Use a dv as states above. Bovs are for rice burners
-I can't remember if a4s ever had push down reverse but I'm guessing you wouldn't have a question about it if it did push down and work. Not sure what the problem could be?
-Clutch engaging high is completely normal. Nothin' to worry bout if it holds. If you have a k04 and it holds good then its aftermarket.
-Rough idle could be caused by that k04 if you have it. Could be a bad tune
-Bad mirrors is another common thing
all you can do is buy new glass

Yeah, it's probably got push-down reverse. I believe that pre-facelift models(96-99.0) have that. That should make it significantly easier to shift into reverse!

My 98 has a push down shifter, i believe all pre-facelifts had push downs.

^^^ lurking future spammer is lurking...

Yes you have push-down reverse. As stated, use a DV (Krauto Parts FTW), clutch is fine, no S4 or any other Audi came with halo lights, mirror glass needs replacement (A4 glass will work, as will Passat glass and A6 glass), the gasket is the turbo-to-downpipe/cat gasket, and if you don't have Vagcom you can do a throttle alignment by unhooking the battery for an hour, then reconnecting it and turning the key on without starting the engine. Leave it on a for a couple minutes until the high-pitch hum underhood stops. Be sure you have your radio code or your stereo will go into safe mode.

I believe that means your clutch is about to go, happened to me, would only catch right at the tippy top then one day it started to slip real bad and kaboom smoked out the world behind me.

That's how Audi clutches are. Put it in 5th at 30mph and floor it. If it doesn't slip then, it's good.
