Definetly wish I was up to the DIY but not sure about this one...it would be my first major one in the engine bay. However, I was wondering, for those of you whose TB actually snapped, what signs of wear did you hear before it actually happened, if any?? I'm asking b/c I'm almost certain mine is going from the sound of my engine but don't quite have the money yet [I'm a student]. I'm at 130 km so I know I'm due for it anyways...I've been reading that the average belts give out around 80k so unless thats in miles, I guess I'm lucky its lasted this long [but I'm assuming thats been miles].

Yeah it is in Miles but in all honesty the TB is a touchy subject, I've known ones that snapped early, and then you have my dads old 5000 as an example where he drove it for 300+K and never changed the TB to my knowledge, and when I asked him, he said he never changed it.

I want to do mine this summer over the weekend sometime. Hopefully I can install more goodies too while I'm at it.

JasonnosaJ the tb definately showed signs of wear before it gave I could feel the roughness and hear noise coming from it... Once you feel your car start to give Id advise pulling over or keeping it at low rpm's until you get home... Cause once it blows thats it.. Its a complete let go of the car, you have to pull over and get it towed... The valves are done! Unless any engines are not interceptor engines.. IF it isnt then the first thing you do when you feel it give is kick it to neutral and Maybe just maybe the Valves would be spared... But im not sure if any of audis engines are not interceptor... Dont believe so..

Regardless DIY is the way to go even at the best shop in town ITS A RAPE...

Thats reasonable.

I have a shop in Philly that charges me 400 labor (I provide the ECS kit) and also have them do the front cam seals at the same time.

David I see on your signature you have replaced your timing belt 3 times!!!!!!! why is that I have also have a 00' a4 1.8TQ Tip???

the local audi dealership said that the timing belt doesnt need to be replaced until 120,000 km...so all this time people said 80k were saying it in miles...thats why i asked the audi mechanic if he's is sure about the 120k mark. He did advice to have it done around 110k. I am still at 95,000km and really hope i could do it myself. It's gaining all the tools is gonna be a hassle for me.

I was quoted $950 CADfor the T/B and everything else around that area to be serviced. Dealership quoted me $1500 and both quotes are including labour. So you got yourself a pretty good deal.
