Default Timing belt?

Trying to save money by skipping it is a bad plan - an engine replacement is a lot more costly than a timing job.
I always thought the timing belt problem was on 1.8Ts. I am considering getting a 1996 A4 with 200k+ miles but if the belt has only been done once (at 120K) could that break soon??? Is the 12V V6 affected? Thanks so much!

It's not that there's a problem per se. All cars with a timing belt require periodic replacement of the belt and associated components. I hope that the car you're looking at has had the belt changed more than once at that mileage and if it was changed before 180k you need to do it.

So now that I got under the hood...it is time to get under the car! I have looked here and the new bit of service is the fuel filter. Reading the posts it looks to be a screw on type filter. I ordered from Amazon (using their handy dandy part finder) and they sent me a barb type filter not a screw on one...(FRAM G3829). My car ( as in sig) is a 2001 a4 quattro 2.8 30v 5 sp silver yummy. What kind of filter do you guys have?

I searched ...really I did. I could not find a post for my year and I do not know what changed from year to year. I found multiple sites that show and list both types for my car...so of course I got the wrong one....see here:
