Default Is this foolish?

Quick Q - I need to replace my tie rod 'ENDS' as told by my mechanic. Actually, he couldn't align my wheels because of the significant amount of play on the wheels.

Is it dumb to JUST replace the outter tie rod? Or should i just go for the whole assembly.

Just do the outers - inners fail much more rarely.

I installed those about a year ago and they work well so far. I noticed a significant improvement in steering. Also, I had to replace mine because there was a visible crack on the rubber and movement on the joint. The cracked tie rod end resulted in up and down movement in the wheel, as opposed to left and right as with a bad wheel bearing. This may help you identify whether its the outer or the inner.
