Front Axle help!!!
so my cv boot has been busted for a while, and i kept forgetting to replace it, so now the obvious has happend, the popping and clacking began yesterday.
so i need a new axle(passenger side) and i want to know the cheapest place to get one, and how hard is this to do? any tips or could you give some sort of instructions of how to get the axle off and how to replace it?
and where can i get a 12-point bit(besides ordering one)
and how long do i have till i cant drive it?

RE: Front Axle help!!!
I bought both of my front axles at the same time from purems.com
shipped to my door the two of them cost me just under 300$
Took me and a friend about 2 and a half hours to do both
should take 45 min to an hour to do the one side
very straight forward
you will need an 8mm tripple square (I believe, could have been a 6 or a 10 tho???)
well, gl!

RE: Front Axle help!!!
So, I had a mad click that I thought was coming from my CV axles, even though the boots wern't torn, I just figured that they somehow slowly ran themselves dry after 10 years...
so, I went to purems.com and almost 300$ later I had the two new front axles on my doorstep.
so, here's a partial DIY, if someone wants to add to it and make it an official DIY, fell free to quote me and take my pics.
1) loosen 17mm alen bolt that connects the axle
2)loosen lug nuts
3) jack up car and remove wheel
4) remove 16mm pinch bolt using 16mm wrenches or sockets
5) with a rubber mallet tap connecting arms up until they come up loose from the pinch "deal"
6) using a 8mm tripple square remove the 6 bolts holding the axle to the trans.
7) pull the abs speed sensor straight out
8) strat loosening the 14mm axle bolt, then tap it in (pushing the axle in)
9) bend the joint of the axle and remove.
-now repeat everything in reverse....
special thanks to Kyle (pyropenguin) for doin all the fun stuff for me
hope this helps someone eventually...
shoulda taken more pics, but oh well...
the old passenger side wheel end CV boot was not torn but was filled with water!

RE: Front Axle help!!!
You should be able to get a triple-square at Sears. And FWIW, I heard my first clicks last night from my CVs, and priced the axles out last night. You can get them from Advance Auto Parts, reman with warranty, for $84/axle with a manual trans, and a bit over $100/axle for auto trans.

RE: Front Axle help!!!
I got the 8mm triple square at Napa. get one that is long and straight. You don't want one thatbumps out to fit a 3/8 drive rightaway, bc you have to get it past the side of the innerboot. You may also find it easier to removeone of you lower control arms instead of both uppers and the tierod end.

RE: Front Axle help!!!
I would think you'd find it more useful to remove the whole knuckle so you can check all your ball joints and tie rod end as long as you're taking that much apart. at that you point you can also check your wheel bearing for wear. the little bolts holding the back side of the shaft will twist a cheapo socket so make sure you get a quality one. I ended up using a pair of vice grips after stripping a few of them. once you have the whole knuckle apart then use a pair of channel locks to squeeze the ball joints. If they pop in and out of socket they're bad and you'll have to get the control arms.
