Default Front Wheel Bearing Question...

I believe it is time to replace the front (passenger) wheel bearing on my 01 A4 1.8t Quattro..

Looked online at a few local parts stores (napa, autozone, etc) and found the best instock inventory at Napa.. But when I called the parts guy asked if I had the 72mm or 84mm (I think those were the two choices) bearings in my car..

No clue

normally I wouldn't have a problem pulling the car apart,, taking the old one in and matching it up, but this time they only had the smaller of the two in stock, and it would be a day or two if I had to order the other... I really can't afford to have the car down (only driver) for two days if I can avoid it..

Other than pulling the car apart, does anyone know how to tell what bearing is installed? ? ?

Local Audi dealer want $761 to do the job.. I think I can do it for less

I would buy an actual OEM part online somewhere like PureMS.com. You don't need to know the sizing if you put in your car model in the search.

Do you have a press? Putting in the bearing correctly is not as simple as it seems. I took my hub off the car and had a guy at a local shop press it in. He did it for free and I gave him 30 bucks tip... lol

I had the back passenger replaced a few months ago and ran into the same problem.. everything was alright but the press part.. Thankfully I have a few friends around with shops that were able to handle that part for me.

Be wary about automatically entering car information and expecting to get the right part. I ran into HUGE issues with part store and even Audi because they had 3 different sized bearings (Ihave a 96 2.8) even after taking the damn thing to Audi they still ordered the wrong part. I forgot the correct way to measure so you get the right size but it does matter. At least it did in my case.

Good to know! ! !

I was on the purems.com site and ran across this...

http://www.purems.com/products/product.php/II=2724

For $93 is there any reason I couldn't just swap this part out, and know for sure that the bearing and hub match... Under the specs most of them all have different mauf cars that they would fit.. But for some reason this one does not show the Audi A4.. Even though that is the only vehicle I have in my "criteria" when I searched.

Like I stated above, I bought and took home no fewer than three bearing before I had the correct one. I would rather back it up with measurements to be sure. I'm only saying this because I wouldn't want anyone else to have to deal with what I went through

that link you posted is for a bmw according to whats under the specs tab.

The different dimensions they are asking for would be the OD of the bearing, not the ID, so you need to measure the OD of yours if you want to be 100% sure.

honestly if you have a dealer near you I would give them a call. Maybe i just have a good parts guy at my local, but they have surprisingly decent prices on parts like the wheel bearing, have them in stock usually, and if they give you the wrong one you know who to go back and ream out for it.. I would give them a call and see what they say.

according to http://www.ecstuning.com/Audi-B5_A4-...rain/Bearings/
the b5s all use the 75mm EXCEPT for the AWM engine code which uses the 82mm so I guess If you know what code your engine is you can go from there?

I have quattro, I'll check to see if I posted the correct size or not. That issue turned a simple fix into a real nightmare.
