Fuse 29 blowing, car won't start
#11
same old problem ..
the dead car has sat unmoved for months now .. and it needs taxing in the uk .. so must be got going ..
it is actually fuse 32 .. 20a "engine timing" that blows .. not 29 as i said before ..
so the same coil pair is burning out each and every time .. changed the coil and coil burns out (seems to melt and crack), fuse blows, car dead ..
changed sparks .. another dead coil .. fuse blows ..
changed ht cables .. another dead coil .. fuse blows ..
cut-out coil and car will happily run on 4 cylinders .. good job after test runs ..
the audi spark told me that it was the ecu ..
changed ecu .. seemed to run ok for a mile or so .. then another dead coil .. fuse blows ..
cut out coil, replaced fuse and back again ..
don't think he's too bright a spark ..
vagcom shows no problem from ecu ..
so, is there a power transistor external to the ecu that drives the coil or is it in the coil itself ?.
i have destroyed 4 coils so far .. any ideas what the problem is ?. am sure i cannot be the first with this problem ..
thanks ..

Problem solved ..
changed ecu on advice of sparky .. then of course needed to recode ..
same old problem ..
so, thought maybe a short in cable (as has been mentioned elsewhere), and pulled out both lots of cables .. noticed that ignition transistor module was not fitted correctly into rubber support ..
buzzed out cables and checked for shorts .. nothing .. so bought second-hand ignition module, and NOW WORKS ..
as ignition was module lose, i wonder if replaced before .. owner says not .. but was bought second-hand long ago ..
oddly enough, I asked the sparky if the were drive transistors between ecu and coil and he said not !! no more visits to that garage ..
