i can bet you that when your get around half way down, it will stop working again and just do random stuff.

 

With my car, the gauge will read relatively accurate until I get down to 1/2 or 3/8 tank, then going down hill or braking will cause it to hit E and the gas light will come on. I'm betting the contact strip in the sending unit is partially oxidized causing the false readings at certain ranges.

 

It's because the gas is sloshing around in the tank
