I just saw a geninue vag-com cable on ebay (actually made by ross-tech - hex-com).
The bad part is that your laptop would need to have a 9 pin serial port (male). Since I only have a usb port, this cable won't work for me.
At this point (5pm edt), the reserve has not been met, and the asking price is $117, and there are about 20 hours remaining in the auction.
If you don't have their cable, you pay $99 for the registered version of the software (though its an older version) so the cable is instantly worth at least $99, plus whatever you'd pay for a generic cable. Presumably you have more features, and few problems with their cables than you would with some other cable.
If anyone has a geninue cable that they want to sell, then I'd be interested if the price was low enough. (There's another cable on ebay for about $800 - rather out of my league).

You can also buy a usb-serial adapter on www.newegg.com for less than $10.

Yes - but the 'generic' cables have communications problems with different parts of the car, and don't fully work with the software in all cases. (my generic cable is fine for clearning the p0420 and p0322 codes). Also, you should pay the $99 registration fee if you are going to use their software (but they advise you to fully test the software with a generic cable first, because they won't provide support on generic cables. There are too many inconsistencies with them).Originally Posted by katiebear00
