It doesn't save gas (unless you're going down in a low gear). If you're in gear and not pressing the gas pedal, your car can actually turn off the fuel supply since the momentum will spin the engine, whereas in neutral, it has to use gas to idle the engine.

ya and keep it in low gear, that way you can limit the speed as you go down. i dont think it'll hurt your transmission either.

how do u figure u dont save gas? yes u have to idle but there is no strain on the engine or anything compared to u accelerating

Idling = richer fuel mixture. So no idling would actually waste more gas then coasting down a hill, like dragonrage said ur engine management has the ability to turn fuel trim off while coasting in gear. Im pretty sure im right about this, let me know if im wrong or not.

this is correct.

read above. It's a matter of no gas vs. very little gas.

more gas than coasting down a hill in gear.

Are you coasting down 2 miles or more? if not it wouldn't even be worth considering.

Hang on, hang on. The most important question that needs to be asked is if your car is manual or automatic. I think you can harm your transmission in an automatic if you coast in neutral and then put it in drive. I was told that it's like a shock to the transmission since it works a lot different from a manual transmission.

in low gear the car will just pump air through the engine with the energy from gravity turning the axles which move the pistons, this is the most fuel efficient thing to do
