goodbye lower door molding
well, i decided against putting a second replacement set on the doors in favor of shaving the pegs and repainting the lower half of the doors. so far i have the pegs all gone.
i actually noticed that two of the doors had some VERY early rust next to the pegs. i decided to dremel those areas too and found that under the paint was circular marks just like from where the pegs were. wonder if for some reason the pegs were rewelded? anyway...
so far, i really like the look, i've got the spots all with primer just to keep the surface rust to a minimum. i want to get some paint this weekend to get the whole thing done. problem is, i don't know the paint code for 2001 b5 silver. i read a while back (sineo i think wrote it) a duplicolor can was a great match but that may have been for a different year. does anybody know the code or shop in west michigan to get a mix at? i will try to get pictures up of the progress so anybody thinking about the shave can see what it looks like before taking a power tool to the paint of their baby.

thanks sineo, i'll have to go pick up a couple of those and see how they look. i was planning on doing the lowers too, so how many cans do you think i'll need for all the stuff?
by the way, the new ride looks bad-a.

Where in west michigan? I had a shop here in Kalamazoo make up a can of Reflex Silver for my Passat. Duplicolor didn't make a can for that. I can't remember the name of the place, but its on Whites road by Burdick Str. If you are not in the area, just look in your yellow pages.
first off: yeah the trim sucks b@lls. had to go. i figured it would looks cool once i saw that guy with the EP A4 do his recent body work porjekt.
next: here's some pics
lame-o rusting pegs behind the trim. you guys should seen the ratty trim that actually fell of a couple months ago. yeah, i've been rolling with the doors like this since around chistmas.

cutting off the pegs. no professional grinder required, just a dremel and a reinforced cut-off wheel, well two-three wheels.

all gone

temporarily primed. you can see that toward the back of the doors, all little extra rust warranted additional work/additional primer, not too bad overall though considering it's almost a ten year old michigan car.

just have to sand, prime for real, sand again...and again, paint and clear. i thik this will take more than one weekend.
tommy, i was asking about the shop because i remember iamthedevil mentioning that he went to a shop that had a scanner that made up for sun fade and age. didn't know if anybody knew of a place like that around here. hey tommy are you going to the thing on the 18th?
will post pics once i start the rest of the work.

very nice. this was on my list but i've since had to use the money for maintenance lol. can't wait to see it done. go to an auto paint shop and ask around. i'm sure there's a place around you. if you find one, give them your gas door to scan
well, i suck and didn't get a carfax when i bought the car. the first time i filled up the gas i found scraps of green masking tape inside the fuel door. i'm not even sure if that is the original paint or when it was done. i figure i'll have the upper half of one of the doors scanned, or a fender.
