Hey guys,

Lately i have been noticing (ushually on first cold morning start ups) that when my engine turns over it makes this weird 'grinding' or 'crunching' noise for no more than a second. I almost want to say it sounds like when you miss a gear when shifting and you get thatnastycrunch, but this one coming from the engine is more muffled.

Can anybody help me out? 109,500 on the clock. Im sure this sound meens something in my engine bay is unhappy.

As a side note. I know its best to leave the car in second when parked but is it ok to start it back up again while its in first. My friend was telling me i shouldent start the car in first. Just wondering.

i had the same problem and got it fixed. The dealership said it was the camshaft housing and it cost quite a bit to repair.

Any sort of grinding or crunching noise is problematic. I would save up to replace that first, because a timing belt is a timing belt, you might be needing a new car soon.

That sound could actually be the timing belt beginning to fail.

I would drive another car until you replace that, just in case, or you will kill the motor when it breaks. If you replace the belt and it keeps doing it you will at least have time to diagnose it, but if the belt goes, youre fu*ked.

the problem I had which sounds exactly like yours had nothing at all to do with the timing belt. Like I said the dealer put a new camshaft housing in and it was fine after that. I had waited about 2 months with the problem before I had it fixed and there were no negative side effects of that so I would say dont be afraid to drive the car. I would just start saving your *** off and take care of both this problem and your timing belt at the same time

Dude, when a timing belt starts to go they can get loose and knock or rattle around on startup. The belt can start to strech out or the tensioner can be going out. On some cars when the tensioner starts to weaken the guides can get damaged too. (i know some 300zx guys that had this happen)

I wouldnt take a chance that it is a housing, its fairly uncommon for the housing to get loose on its own like that. Timing belts blowing up at or before 109K miles is not uncommon at all.

And just so you know, when the the belt starts smacking around, it is the camshaft housing that it will smack into, so it will be a similar noise.

It could just be a loose housing, but I wouldnt risk it. Also, even if it is, think about what made the housing loose to begin with? Take that housing off and theres you're T-belt. Belt kit is under 200 bucks, a used 2.8 is over a grand and will still more then likely need the belt done before installation.

Mine made similar sound at start-up last year and it ended up being the cam crank tensioner wasn't a cheap fix, but my shop did the tb, wp, ect for no extra labor. Not sure how problematic this part is on a 2.8 tho.....
