I suspect a bad ECU. I had my go out on my old 99.5 A4. Similar issue, except the dash lights would come on except the CEL. If the CEL does not come on when you turn the key into the "ON" position, the ECU is probably bad. They can be found used fairly cheap. Your best bet would be to find one and see if you can swap it in before you buy it to see if that's the actual problem.

no lights come on the dash no cel can turn radio on but no headlights or anything else its a manual I will have to have it towed. Could I do a push start I know the Manual say do not go over 100 yards or it could cause damage to catalytic converter or a jump start with cables
Thanks Dennis

Have some more info. Just talked to the guy I bought the Car from. He said you have to turn the Key till just before the car will Crank and then the Cluster gages will come on you le the key go back a little and then turn to start. I tried it but I can not get the Instrument cluster to come on. Sound to me like it could be a fuse or the Key cylinder is worn out and needs to be replaced. Any one see this before. My first week as a Audi owner has not be great.
Thanks for any help in advance Dennis

Even with the key out, if your headlights are on inside, you should have parking lights on outside. It sounds like your ignition switch. They are not expensive, and putting it in yourself is not hard. There's a DIY somewhere around here....there was a recall on the ignition switches for the B5s....reading what you said, and the former owner, it really sounds like your ignition switch....
Here's a thread with exactly your issues, no dash lights, cranks but won't start:

Just make sure you get the correct ignition switch for your car.....
