Default Help with brakes

I have a 99.5 a4 2.8 quattro and it's time to have my brakes done...I am just looking for suggestions. From what I have heard, if I bring it to Audi they will essentially rape me, saying that the rotors should be replaced, etc, etc and it will be a ~$900 job which is not something I'm looking to do. I bring it to the dealer for service and what-not, but brakes are easy and I will just have my old mechanic do it.

Any recommendations for pads, etc?

Thanks in advance for the help.

I just put on ECS slotted rotors and mintex red box pads. Took me about a half hour a wheel. I only did the front ones, and my cost was under 200 bucks. If you have the tools do it yourself. And don't go to the dealer for easy things like that.

Default Help with brakes

I did a four wheel brake job not too long ago. New front rotors and EBC green pads all the way around from Tire Rack. Probably should have had the rear rotors turned down but they weren't too bad. All went well. I can't recall what kind of bolt head the caliper bolts had but that would be your only surprise, tool-wise.

Yes, the dealer would hurt you bad...get out the kneepads.

The brakes on an A4 are pretty easy to change. The rear can be a little PITA sometimes because of the way the piston retracts, but otherwise its straight-forward.

I believe the caliper's have a 7mm hex bolt. I remember because the one I had was too short and I had to go and buy a longer one.

I got everything from ECS Tuning. I like dealing with them, and have always had good service.

ECS are always responsive when you call them. If you plan on putting the brakes on yourself then front rotors and pads should cost you about $125 for stock replacements. Go aftermarket and you can get drilled Zimmerman rotors w/ Mintex redbox pads for about $200 shipped. Of course you can go crazy and buy Powerslot rotors for $350 and EBC Greenstuff pads for $80.

Sky's the limit with modding... There's always something better to get.

I wouln't go for drilled rotors, they are prone to cracking from what I hear. They may be good for track use, but for an everyday driver I woulnt think so. I was just going to get factory rotors, but I have problems with wet braking. The slotted ones were a good alternative for me. It really made a difference.

Most people have no problems with the drilled rotors, though there is some debate on whether the drilling actually does anything to help brake fade.
