however by removing the cables to clean them wont i throw my radio in safe mode?

Yes it will lock your radio. You can hook up a 9v battery to the cig lighter and it'll prevent the radio from locking.

You should have your radio code in your paperwork if you still have it or hook up your jumper box to your positive cables before you take them off. that way the car still has power while you clean your terminals.
