It's just a fail safe mode if the TCU see's something wrong. You go as fast as 4th gear will take you without getting to high in the revs. You could cruise around 60mph comfortably in 4th. Its just the get up and go that you'll be missing from 1st-3rd.

It's located on the tranny, its what detects which gear you are in. Don't know about a price, and I don't know if it's something I'd do myself or not. Send auditech79 a pm about it.
This doesnt really give much info, but I had this in my photobucket album:

Dam I thought maybe it would be outside of the tranny. That means it will probally be a lot to fix def if they gotta drop the tranny. Sucks cuz I just got that car back.

It sounds to me like something is seriously wrong with your Transmission Control Module. If the red display unit on your dash that shows what gear your in (whether it be P, R, N, D, S or 1-7) begins to flash then your really in trouble. Your TCM communicates to your tranny when you put your car into gear and tells it which gear to go into. It is pretty much sounds like an electrical malfunction that your experiencing but the TCM is a major replacement. A commone sign of this is that your reverse lights will fail to come on when the car is supposed to be in reverse. Good luck.

I'm so screwed. But I have no problems with reverse though. Its just when I put into drive.

The range switch is outside of the tranny. It's actualy a pretty common fail, more so than the tcu. You can limp around in 4th for as long as you need to, but the sooner you get it diagnosed the better.
