HIDs?
so i see alot of ppl with HIDs. and was wondering what it would take to do a conversion on my 97 2.8. i know we have that coupon discount on the first page of the forum but i dont think thats for the conversion. also, does the higher the HID number make a difference other than the color? i really want to do this but dont want to fu(k somethin up. help would be greatly appreciated. it would also be cool if ppl could post pics of there cars with HIDs and specify the level they got(ex: 6000k)
It's plug and play, order a H7 Xenon Kit and it comes with everything you need including the HID bulbs which are different than the regular ones. The bulbs plug into the ballasts and the ballast plugs into your factory low beam harness. Then just find a place to mount the ballasts. It's that simple, I swear!! On my 99.5 B5, I have the projector housing and they have a place to mount the ballast right underneath for the OEM ballasts. I didn't get the DDM kit but instead bought a 6000K Xentec kit off of ebay for $59.98. I would have gotten the DDM ones but I didn't know about them, I think they run for around the same price. My brother also has a Xentec kit on his E30 BMW M3 and they look nice, so I got the same kit. I still haven't installed my kit on my B5 because I am still fixing it up, it needs a new front bumper and hood which I plan on getting fixed in 2 weeks. But I bought another 9003 6000K Xentec kit from the same seller on ebay for my 2005 Toyota Rav4 and installation was exactly as I described. Except the RAV4 doesn't have OEM mounts for the ballasts underneath the headlamps, so I just mounted them elsewhere. The kit I got is the following: H7 6000K Xentec From the same seller, both times I bought my kit, I've received them within 2 business days from CA - NY!! Fast shipping times! Just specify the H7 bulb type and the color temperature you want.
This is the DIY i made when doing the 2-piece to 1-piece headlight conversion, also includes a tidbit about the HID conversion i did at the same time. I used the kit from VVME and have been happy with them. I'd hardly call it "plug and play" though, i had to re-wire the whole harness forward of the bumper.
It's always smart to use the projector headlights when upgrading to HID's as it is technically illegal to use regular headlights with HID's.
The OEM factory color is 4300K (pure white) since it's the closest to daylight color. It's not necessarily the best color but you will get the best output/visibility.
Best of luck.

Dude I don't know what connectors those VVME's came with that you had to go through all that complicated setup! Maybe the 2 pieces have a different harness than my 1 piece? My Xentec kit comes with a wire that has 2 leads that plug into the factory H7 harness and the other end of that 2 lead wire looks like a rectangular connector with curved corners that connect right into the ballast. In all cases I have seen here with my friends and my brother, plus my own experience on my RAV4 it is a plug and play process as long as I am getting the correct bulb type kit for the car on which you are converting.
