how do i clean out fuel tank?
After sitting idle for a few years, I'm trying to resuscitate my 1997 A4 1.8T Quattro. I know that the fuel tank never had stabilizer in it, so I'm looking for ideas on how to clean out the crap in the fuel tank.
From what I understand, pulling the tank out is a nightmare on a Quattro since you essentially need to drop the rear end to get it out. Are there any suggestions on how to clean it out while installed?
The other stuff I'm doing to clean the fuel system is:
- replace fuel pump
- replace fuel filter
- have fuel injectors professionally refurbed
- run a solvent and compressed air through the fuel lines
- replace any rubber fuel hoses
If anyone has run through the same procedure, I'd love to hear from you!
TIA,
---J

Eastwood Restoration sells a kit for restoring gas tanks. Google them but I'm pretty sure their website is www.eastwood.com

Question: If you remove the fuel pump, do you have a good view into the gas tank? I wonder if I can get some solvent in there through that opening, somehow slosh it around to get rid of the gunk, and then siphon it out.
You should have enough access to the tank to get some solvent in there and stir it around.
If the old fuel pump still works, use that to empty out the solvent and old gas. obviously don't pump it through the freshly cleaned fuel lines, or use the pump to push solvent through those as well.
Good luck.
