Default How to insure I am getting a quality B5.

Hello, I am new here. I have been lurking for awhile but I decided to join. Now, I am looking to get a B5 A4 I am most likely looking for a 2001 model. I am wondering what I need to find out about before purchasing. I plan on asking if the timing belt has been replaced. Also maybe the water pump. I will also ask for mechanic/service records. Is there anything else I need to know?

umm it all depends on where or who u buy from... if u buy from some 20 yr old kid, bet on no maintenace other than oil changes... if u buy from some old lady, chances are u wont find a stick, but prolly lots of records... and depending on ur area of living, might be rust underneath.. best bet is to talk to the person about the car and take them down to Audi and see if they have any service records, or if they can do a check on the car... doubt this helped but thats my 2 cents lol

Ok, thanks guys. I also have another question. Once I make sure everything is shipshape I would like to chip it. Do I need to replace my dv or can I do without?

DV= Diverter Valve, Audi's version of a blow off valve which recirculates the pressure back into the system instead of out into the atmosphere. From what I've seen on other posts, yes, if you chip it, you have to upgrade the DV in order to hold the increased boost. A few places sell upgrades, like APR and such. Someone else would have to tell you which ones are best for you application.

As for things to look for, I know I saw a post a while ago on that exact subject. Make sure the coolant isn't green! I know that's a big one. Something to do with bad seals and stuff. Also, synthetic oil changes are a must. Pretty much, if you take it to a knowledgable Audi mechanic, he'll be able to tell you if it's a good buy or not... hope this help a little...
