twoeightquattro, I think what you may be referring to is the purge valve, which should be making a ticking noise. Also, as Dragonrage was saying, the SAI pump is underneath the entire air box, and is hard to see/feel without coming up from underneath the car.

Does anything happen when you put gas in your car? When you are close to empty and you put gas in does your car have a hard time starting?

 

twaker2 is correct. That is the Evap Purge Valve. It directs fumes from the fuel tank into the engine. Erratic idle can be tied to this valve, but in most cases it's something else. You can check it with Vag com. If your car has a hard time starting only after fill-up, it's usually a telltale sign that your Evap Purge Valve isn't working properly.

Have you cleaned your Throttle Body and done a good TBA?
