I'm so confused now. help please
98a4 1.8t Long story short. Started the car and got welcomed with a rough idle and flashing CEL. Codes ran p0302 I believe, cylinder 2 misfire. Changed the coil and spark plug nothing. Took the car to a guy that I thought knew what he was doing. He said the fuel injector was clogged and changed it. no dice. So, I'm thinking probably ICM, based on the forums. He comes to same conclusion after chasing the cylinder 2 wires back to the ICM. I thought the ICM was on top of the airbox, however, he is chasing the wire back to a metal box in the top right corner of the engine bay with wires coming out of it. What I thought was the ICM he is calling the emission control unit. Every time I look up ICM the pictures are for the unit on top of the airbox held down with two bolts. What is the thing in the right corner? Anybody in the north georgia area? Thanks for any advice.
the ICM is on the airbox. it looks like this

the underside has a metal heatsink on it.
i have no idea what other part you are looking at.
when the ICM dies, it does like to take cylinder #2 first for some reason.

yes, it acts as an amplifier to the ignition signal. the ECU sends the signal to the ICM, which triggers the coils. newer cars (2000+) have an 'ICM' built into the coil hence the extra wire. AEB coils are generally more reliable then the coils with integrated ICMs are, but we have one extra component that can die.
