Default Inner CV Boot replace

I am putting new boots on the inner CV joint of my 1997 V6 2.8L 12V FWD.

I removed that end cap and did everything. I am trying to get the new end cap back on.. I have already slightly dented it (probably not an issue) but do not want to damage it any more.

Any ideas how to get that thing to seat in there. I have tried several things but it just doesn't look seated in place.

It looks like the one in this video (which the guy doesn't show how to do it)

IMO, it's not even worth doing boots on our cars. You can get new brand new (complete) axles so cheap that it doesn't even make sense to do boots only these days.

Most importantly: If you've already taken the axle off of the transmission, then you've most likely ruined the axle. Our cars are designed shitty in that respect. When you put a new axle on, there are special instructions just to keep the inner side from falling apart before you even put it on, so if you've taken it off already, you're axle is likely ruined, even if you get the boot on.

G/L w/everything.

I don't understand... how have I (or does the axle get ruined)

Also how does or will the inner axle fall apart before I even put it on. (even with a new axle)? I have never seen or heard of special instructions (what are they).

Thank you.

The way the bearings are designed in the inner side of our axles, they have the ability to fall out, or come out of place. You might be okay, but I had to do one of my axles twice because of that - and like I said: a new axle is cheap enough nowadays and it's also easier to do, so why waste your time on a boot, when the bearings already have dirt in them?

Not only do I speak from the above experience, but I found the advice I'm giving you when I originally bought a boot kit and was asking questions about it as well. After getting that advice I ditched the boot idea and got a new axle and I'm glad I did.

Thanks so much, your advice here and other places has helped. I had some aftermarket chinese axles before and they are horrible (had vibration issues). So I found some genuine Audi OEM axles and replace all the boot and outer joints. Since I did the outer joints first I am into it for a bit of money. I was fortunate in that I have found a local place (25 miles away) that rebuilds/repairs Steering Racks and Axles. They have done thousands (according to them) with good reviews. They said they would cap the end for me, so I am hoping/think I will be okay.

If not then I guess I will be forced to try the aftermarket ones again.

NP. I help when I can.

Capping the ends is a great idea if you're committed to re- booting. Just don't take the caps off until you're lined up and ready to bolt it to the tranny.

G/L and let me know how it goes.
