Default intake manifold changeover valve

two questions regarding the 'intake manifold changeover valve' on my 1.8 APT.

1. A garage dude the other day called it the EGR, but i was pretty sure it just changed the flow path of intake air. is it an EGR or not?

2. Are the vacuum hoses replaceable - there's two, and they are both detachable from one end, but when I tried to tug the other end they just make bad 'don't pull me like that' noises and feel like they're tearing. the hoses need replacing as they are getting bear tatty. but i'm loathe to buy a whole new unit. anywho I thougt i'd ask those that know before hitting it up with some brute force and ignorance.

thank you in advance

G

Not sure which valve your talking about. Our cars didn't come with a EGR valve, but some people call the Secondary Air Pump valve a EGR valve. That valve has nothing to do with the intake manifold though.

I am not really sure what valve is used to change the path of intake air.

ok, i went into audi to get a vacuum hose and so was looking at the diagram and YES they are detacthable.

but to just to clarify:

that's the part i meant. what does it do?

i found a note in the workshop manual that describes the 'IMCV' as changing the intake from 'long' to 'short' at around 4000RPM. but i can't find a diagram in the workshop manual that shows the IMCV on the APT engine, only on the V6 engines. So i can't say that the two descriptions should definitely be put side by side.
