No Maintanance records with 122k miles and you have only done the clutch? I hope you are planning on changing the timing belt very soon before it decides to start the changing process for you and cause you a lot more grief to the pocketbook.

Thanks for the warning activeautosports. Sorry, forgot to mention I later found out the timing belt, water pump, and chain assembly were all changed at 105k.

With that aside, about how many miles is a B5 A4 going to last, on average? I take great care of mine now, but have no idea about it's history prior to 122k.
Are there any ways to check for "not so obvious" abuse?

Sure take off the valve cover(s) and look at the cams and lobes for excessive wear. This would give you a slight idea of how good the oil pressure is (should be good) and if the engine oil ever ran very low for an extended amount of time. You could do a compression test too. Both 1.8 and 2.8 should last a long long time. Both should go into the 200k's before needing the head gasket replaced if they were never overheated badly. The engines are solid and should go a long long time before you need to worry about piston rings or crank bearings, etc. It's just that everything else attatched to the engine might need replaced 3 times by then

Thanks, I'll do all of that, just for peace of mind.
