Keyless entry on 97?
Yeah, that's why I bought a remote key fob off ebay for 30 bucks then had the key cut at the local VW/Porsche dealership for 10 bucks. Program using 2 keys with series of locking and un-locking... done. I've done this on a 97 and 98.5
The only caveat is you need to get a remote within a certain serial # range. Search and you can find this, here, audizine or audiworld.
Or you can pay 170 at the stealership.

It was $10 to cut the key. Not bad considering it's 2 bucks to cut a house key at the hardware store.
As I said, just rolled into the VW/Porsche dealership, went to parts counter, handed dude remote key with blank and original non-remote key. 5 minutes and 10 bucks later I had the duplicate remote key. And I'm in Canada, should be cheaper in the US.

so based on the info i plan to order an uncut switchblade style key remote, get it cut at the dealer and program it myself. im trying to figure out whether this remote will work with my 97 a4, it says it will but i have no experience with replacing a remote, and you cant always trust what you read:

I wish I could help you out on the key, but we require a face to face meeting to purchase a key as do most other dealerships. For security reasons, to make sure we are dealing with the owner of the car. I'm sorry I can't help you on that, but it sounds like you received great advice from others here on this forum.
