Scan for codes and post them... you're more likely to get some good advise that way.

Also, not to insult your intelligence, but check your oil.

Could be the cam chain tensioner. Could be many things, though.

Probably the cam chain tensioner. Mine just went up the other day.

Use a stethoscope to pinpoint the sound's location. I had a knocking everyone (mechanics included) swore was rod knock. I poked around with the scope and found it to be a loose power steering pulley.

well I have been poking around with sethoscope and found the knocking coming from the rear of the motor like where the cam chain is at. I have pulled codes and I'm getting a code for an advanced cam and intake air circute to low. I have also tried thicker oil but nothing seems too make the knock quiter or any good results.

Have Fun!

All VW's have slightly noisy lifters. There is a big difference between a little vw knock/tap and a bad cam chain tensioner. If your oil pressure was low enough to keep oil from getting to the top then you'd likely have a oil pressure light.. You could check your oil pressure first to be sure, though.

ok i have checked my oil pressure and i got 40-60 psi. so im getting good oil pressure. but the only thing is that the knocking noise happening when i first start my car when its cold and it happenes when my car is at operating temp. so im thinking its the cam chain tensioner.
