Lowering Springs
I've been running Neuspeed race springs on stock sport shocks for about 2 years now. Both rear shocks are blown, the fronts are still in pretty good shape, but the ride is still pretty bouncy. Bilstein race shocks are on my (very long) to-do list for next year.
From my experience I would just say jump straight to coilovers.
Why?
1. For the price of springs plus new shocks you'll only be a couple hundred away from coilovers
2. Lowering springs will wear out struts faster than coilovers will.
I have H&R race springs right now and love them. I first put them on my stock sport struts and it blew them in about 2k miles. Then I bought Bilstein Sport struts and it rode great for about 40k miles but now the struts are mushy and it doesnt handle as well anymore.
Going with lowering springs is good for the short run but from my experience I would just suck it up and pay the extra for coils, thats what I wish I did.
