Default Motor swap questions on 1999 2.8 quattro

right now its a automatic, the car has sentental value to me so I want to keep it and upgrade the whole vehicle.

Can/is there any S4 engine I can put into my car, I would also want to convert my car from and auto to manuel transmission.

If not, can I swap the motor out for a 1.8T since they have more tuning potential

you could put a 4.2 in it if you have deep pockets. a 2.7t s4 engine would be the way to go for speed, a 1.8t would be the way to go if you like little things to take no time at all. you can make an a4 faster than a stage 3 s4 if you, again, have deep pockets. theyre all direct fit i believe except the 4.2. youll need an ecu to go with it and alot of other stuff. itd probably be easier to get a totaled car with the engine you want, and just strip them both and swap IMO. theres a whole list in the newbie guide of things for a trans swap too. its not easy, or fun

You can make a Ford Focus faster than a Stage 3 S4 with deep pockets, but that's a stretch. The S4 will generally be a better swap if you are going for speed. There are people on here that have 10 second A4's on this forum and I am in no way taking away from the time, money, and efforts put into them. But those guys are serious professionals and those are some serious cars. Honestly, just check youtube and talk to your local Audi/VW groups to try and see for yourself...

You could also go VR6T, those are always fun

It is said that swapping a 2.7T into a B5 can cost around $10k, and VR6 swap can cost upwards of $20k. Swapping auto for manual can easily cost $2k in just parts.

I would put a 1.8T in it and swap the transmission if you're looking for a turbo setup; but I always thought the supercharger whine was appealing, and SC B5s are still not too common. Installation of a PES blower will probably cost as much as the 1.8T engine swap (unless you're thrifty and scavenge like somebody), and you will get to keep your sentimentally valuable motor as well with approximately the same power as a stock S4...

Also keep in mind that it doesn't take 500hp for a car to be fun. Everyone talks big about wanting huge hp numbers but the reality is that even 200-250hp can be hugely entertaining if you're careful with parts selection. It's also not horribly expensive or difficult. Be realistic with yourself on what you honestly expect to make powerwise (the noob FAQ has great info for that as well as some rough pricing). Once you nail that down then you can decide which, if any, engine to swap into your car.

Supercharge it! Then a lot of handling mods =D It's cheaper then swapping most likely. Although if you bought a 1.8t with a blown transmission the swap could be as little as 1500-2k (just engine not manual) if you found a manual quattro 1.8t that was wrecked that could be done too.
