my interior fan quit working?!?
I am going to check fuses today and if that isn't the culprit, I guess the next step is to replace the fan motor. Has anyone else had this happen? My car is a 98.5 2.8Qm. The display still works and is adjustable, but no air blows. It was really strange, I just walked out to my car, got in, turned on the key and no air.
there's a relay for it also. there's a climate control diagnostic on audiworld.com, check it out. your blower motor is behind the glove box and the relay should be next to it i think but i'm not too sure.
When the fan is not blowing, does the auto function on the climate control cause the fan speed to go up and down like its lost? That could be something else with the climate control system.
If the fan quit working and the climate control isn't searching for the blower motor, it is most likely the fan speed relay that is attached to the fan assembly. It is the finned portion of the blower assembly. Or the motor itself has gone bad. See pics below.

I have more info for you, coming up.

Here is how you can check your climate control system. Click the link.

You can check this out as well. It has to do with the load reduction relay. You will notice that other things stop working like mentioned in the thread. I also had "similar" problems in my early 99 A4 that were like what is stated about the load reduction relay. It was the ignition switch in my car though, because the headlights would not come on as well. Here is the link.

Hope this gets you closer to your fix. Good luck.

WOW-
thank you for the informative links and replies. I am going to go out and check all of that stuff right now and let you know what I come up with. As of now the symptoms of my car are:
absolutely no air coming out at all no matter what setting it is on. Prior to this, there were no odd noises coming from the blower motor, which makes me think relay or something other than motor failure. When I turn on the climate control the settings are adjustable but after awhile, they do fluctuate some as if they are searching. When the settings are off, they stay off. I was also thinking that I could just go and tap on the motor with a wrench (like a worn starter) to see if it knocks any brush dust loose causing the motor to work intermittently? I'll let you know when I get back.

Alright. Here is what happened to me. The A/C idler pulley bearings went bad on my car. The who pulley cocked to the side and froze in place without the A/C clutch engaged. I think this damaged the electronic actuator of the A/C compressor assembly. When the A/C clutch tries to engage, it blows the fuse. If you select auto, and it is hot enough to auto trigger the A/C it will blow the fuse. The way I run my climate control now until I fix the problem (I bought a used compressor as a donor), is that I select auto and turn the A/C off. Then, I replace the fuse. When doing this, you can change the inside temp just fine. It will always come on again without triggering the A/C no matter what the outside temp is. It will however blow the fuse if someone selects auto again, or the A/C switch. If the fuse is blown for the blower motor, it will cause the blower speed display to fluctuate as stated earlier. If the motor or the speed controller are bad, I would assume they would cause the same display situation.
Double check the fuse again just to be sure.

You can get blower motors from your local euro parts salvage yard, like I did. I got an S4 blower motor, thinking that it was the problem, only to find out it was the a/c compressor causing the problem. I have an extra sitting around. You can get a new one from places like ECStuning.com amongst other online parts suppliers from $75 and up.

So I went out and followed that procedure from the audiworld page and came up with 59 out of 76 fault codes, and I have no idea what they are in relevance to , I'm actually more confused now. Maybe you could tell me what to look out for or if there is a pattern that I need to be aware of. basically, from what I understand from that link, there are 76 possible fault codes onboard that are available through your climate control interface and out of 76 codes 59 came back with a value other than 0 (0 indicating no malfunction) am I screwed? Help me obewon kinobe!
