Default Need help with turboing my B5

i have a 1996 A4 1.8. its german spec. i was wondering if anybody knew what i needed to turbo it. my plan was to go to a salvage yard over here and find a b5 1.8t and just take parts off that so i can at least have a stock set up on my 1.8. does anyone know exactly what parts i will need to convert my 1.8 to a 1.8t? thanks

im sure not many people here have experience with this as the non-turbo 1.8 was not available over in the US, so most people have never even seen one.

i would think it would be more difficult then just throwing a turbo and manifold on, your car and ECU arent setup for the electronics that go with it. like the N75 valve and such. if you figure it out let us know. you also might want to ask around here...

I believe the 1.8 N/A head is different than the 1.8T head, but I'm honestly not sure about the block.

As a bare minimum, you'll need the turbo, intercooler, boost hoses, exhaust manifold, intake manifold, and likely the head.

Then you'll need an ECU or a stand-alone fuel management to run it all. If you want to use all Audi parts, you'll need the diverter valve, N75, MAF, and MAP sensors (depending on model year).

Most here are not going to know which parts are interchangeable because 1.8 N/A was never offered in the States.

Your best bet is likely to swap the whole 1.8T into your chassis along with the electronics. The other option is to browse the internet for a tuning company in Germany that might sell a full turbo kit for your car.

Good luck!

I agree with Tweaked, look into a full swap, it would probably be cheaper than trying to piece together everything that you would need...

you will need to find the most pressurized oil port and drill it and that will connect to your turbo depending on what turbo set up you go with you will need a coolant pipe tap. also gonna need a turbo oil pan if it fits....if not ur gonna have to drill the holes carefully and tap them and then have a piece made for ur oil return from ur turbo to oil pan. your gonna need a ecu or you can pull up a diagram and put/remove the pins for the ecu to be a turbo ecu.u shouldnt need a new wiring harness but u may need to cut and swap a few wires. also you may need to redo you coil plug order

Example:
4,1,2,3
3,2,1,4

and the oil filter housing is where i drill and tap its the most pressurized area for oil. and on the block you may need to block your unpressurized ports i had to do that on a few of my eclipses

alll this knowledge is based on a (DSM) worked on those for years every swap you can think of i have down with them also have made the none turbo turbos.....

goodluck

You'd probably have an issue with compression, too. Forced induction setups usually run a lower compression to handle more boost. The heads do partially determine compression, so if you're lucky, that's the only difference. But I wouldn't count on it. There may be different pistons as well. You can do it with a higher compression engine, but you might have to limit your boost to being less than the 1.8t OE setup.

Hard to say which would be better since we don't seem to be sure of the internal differences in the engine.

Also, camshafts also often differ between N/A and F/I setups.
