Default need new clutch

So I'm looking at a 99 2.8l with 117xxx miles on it. The car looks to be well maintained but the clutch is still original so I'm thinking it's gonna have to be replaced soon. How much would this be from a Audi dealer and from a independent shop ? ( if anyone knows any good shops around Chicago that would be much appreciated! ) thanks !

Dealer will probably want something in the 2500-3000 range. It all depends on the labor rate, and whether or not you're installing an OEM part. I suspect that a reasonable independent shop might offer to do it somewhere in the 1500+ range.

Don't jump the gun. Most 2.8s don't get launched like the 1.8Ts I'd bet, due to the less-powerful mods out there. My car (99 2.8) has its original clutch and at a little over 191k miles it's still holding strong.

CM FX100 or SB stage 2 HD-O would be plenty. Thes3e are 1 step above OEM stock clutch.

The CM FX100 will have a stock pedal feel and engagement.

I agree with ImTheDevil. My 98 2.8 has the original clutch with just over 200,000 miles on it. I drive it pretty easy but the clutch seems to be fine. Did you notice an issue with it on a test drive?

Thanks for all the help guys. No I have not test drove it yet, I'm going to look at it sometime later this week. The owner said the clutch was still solid but I wasn't sure if it really was with that many miles on it.

hey mike if you don't mind me picking your brain a bit, what do you think if this set up.....
http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/sk...%26+Drivetrain

Its a dual mass flywheel conversion kit that also contains the clutch kit...my future only involves getting an intake, high flow exhaust, chip tune and fmic and slightly bigger turbo like a k04 or something along those lines, will this kit be able to handle that..im assuming maybe i'll be making 250-300hp??? What do you think???

Your link seems to bring up a BMW exhaust on their site.

Have to watch out for some single mass flywheel conversion kits. Some of them include a cast flywheel and are designed to only work with that companies clutch kit. Some of them are also cheap and are less then equal to a OEM kit.

For an A4 with anything more then a stock K03 I would suggest nothing lower then a clutch kit that has a higher clamping load pressure plate with a Kevlar disk. This includes the CM FX300(228mm/240mm kits) and the SB Stage 2 HD-TZ. Anything less then that might not be able to handle a well tuned K04 quattro setup when driven hard, will NOT handle it if launched.

When it comes to a clutch it is the last place you want to cut corners by going with something really cheap and this is because of the labor time/cost of having it replaced again. Buy something that might not hold because it cost less might end up costing more then a good clutch that is proven to hold once you have to buy a 2nd clutch setup and pay to have it put in.
