Ok all need help with an issue I'm having with my 2.8L power steering. Are there any other cars or years of Audi that i can look for in a salvage yard to save some money on the power steering pressure line. Mine is leaking at both fittings and then I also have an issue with the rack and pinion, it looks like it is leaking from both ends and the boot on the driver's side and the inner boot on the passenger's side are shredded. I am going to be rebuilding the pump and rack but the line is killing me.

Any thoughts?

 

Buy a rack. I have it from an Audi technician that it's such a pain that after failing at it three separate times, he stopped trying and just replaced them. Replacement is aggravating but not horribly difficult. I wrote a DIY for it awhile back and put it in the DIY forum. As for the line, I'd think that a 96 or 97 donor car would work as long as it's the same as yours (quattro or fwd whichever you have, and the same transmission). A pump is probably cheap enough from a part-out to be worth just replacing outright.

I found a 95 A6 with the same V6 2V engine and everything on the top end looks the same. My intent is if i can get a line to give me a couple of months at least I am going to a local hydraulic shop and see what they can do about fabing a line that will hold together longer than what the A4 lines seem to be doing now. A local Audi dealer told me that line is a known problem but no one seems to be doing anything about it.
I'm going to give it a shot on both rebuilds anyway and see what happens. If i run across anything though i am going to try and do a write up on it here and maybe save some other people the aggrivation and cost.

 

Definitely worth a shot and hopefully both the line and the rebuild work out. Please do the DIY if you rebuild and update the thread. This kind of stuff will help this place grow.

Will do and I'm going to be taking plenty of pictures during the process to try and help everyone out. I picked up the rack rebuild kit yesterday and there are many o-rings in there. The local dealership got me a partial blown up view of the rack but I need the blow up view of all the internals to help me match new parts with old ones.
