today i decided to change the rear brake pads. i have a 99 a4fwd.
the problem i am facing is that when i took out the old wore down pads and went to out the new ones in they dont fit or course because you have to push back push rod. so thats where my problem lies.how do you push back that rod so the new pads will fit?
ive tried using clamps and relieving by bleeding out fluid but none seems to work.
please help

where the arrow points is the push rod that i cant push back in(ive also circled it)

 

thats the piston, you need to twist it to push it back. A parts store should have one that you can take out on loan/rent.

 

yeah, the piston must be turned while depressing it.....

I bought my tool from ecs...but since then I have seen the same tool at harbor freight....

All the way till it stops.

 

You should be able to do it without the tool if in a pinch, which it looks like you are in.

 

Turn it all the way in, and then use the brake pedal when you're reassembled to push it back out to contact the rotors with the pads.

 

not a good idea.....just pick up the tool/or borrow one from your local autoparts store....

I could see someone with a pair of giant vicegrips and a clamp tearing through the boot and chewing up the head of the piston pretty bad....

in a pinch....just have your lady drive you to work in the morning...lol

 

Yeah its always better to have the right tool but you don't need vice grips just a wide flat head screwdriver (I have a 26" matco that I use). I put pressure as I screw in and it has retracted those pistons.
