New Guy - 2000 1.8 Quattro
Hi Guys,
A few weeks ago I picked up a new (to me) A4 Quattro. This is the first car have owned in a few years, but my bones are getting older and I didn't think I could take another Chicago winter on the bike (K75RT).
So I found a good deal and now I own a cage!
I have been reading the archives, but I hope the group won't mind if I throw out a few issues.
My primary concern is the brakes. There is a strange clunk that often (but not always) occurs on the FR wheel upon braking. This occurs about 70% of the time and does not seem to be directly related to brake pressure, but it does seem to occur more often with slow braking than with hotter stops. It does not seem to effect stopping power.
The clunk repeats about 3x per second until the vehicle come to a stop. I figure it is the ABS system is hitting on the front right wheel for no good reason. It does not feel like a caliper problem to me, but what do I know? Am I on the right track? I think it might be a speed sensor, pump, or brain. Is there a resource that can help me learn more about the A4 ABS system?
I have a new Bentley manual, but the section ABS section is sparse.
Second. . .for my bike there is realoem.com that allows me to find any part for any BMW. Is there a similar site for Audi?
Thanks in advance for any assistance. I will have a lot more question over the next couple of months, but I will get up to speed pretty quickly.
Peace,
Jon in Chicago

I have heard that the FR calipers freeze on many B5's and that the ABS sensor fails, but the ABS problems usually start in the rear. Search the B5 forum for the "things that go wrong with ALL A4's" thread and this may answer some of your questions. Hope this helps and welcome to the club.
my front right caliper froze up last year, causing me to have to do new calipers and rotors & pads on both sides. The fact that it is doing it 3x per second sounds to me like it could be ABS related, but i'm a newbie, so who knows. just for reference, my caliper froze around 130k miles, and my ABS seems to be working ok at 140k, i feel the pulse when i brake hard, and there is no abs light on.
Btw, the caliper locked up on mine pretty quickly after i got the car. i remember showing my little brother how the abs brakes worked, and the caliper locked up within the week iirc. i always wondered if i had caused my own brake job by stopping so hard, until i read online how common it was to fail.
